Does biotechnology grounds a good research scope (outside india)?

I have a friend who is working in biotech, but most say that it's very competitive, and pay is very low considering you invested some 10+ years for undergraduate+ph.D+ post-doc. If you compare it to computer information industry, investment is twice as much, and pay is half. So, unless you love what you are doing, i am not sure if it's worth it. Many people who are in biotech industry are people who couldn't become a professor at college.
