Would Jack Daniels be a good choice?

I'm 20 years old, never been big into drinking, but been drinking every weekend since beeing stationed here in Germany (drinking age here is 18). I've always just had Budweiser, Busch, and Miller, but looking to expand. I've been told that I might like Jack Daniels if I enjoy those type of beers, but don't want to jump right in because it is quite a bit more expensive than beer. I've smelled it, and it smells pretty damn strong, but I'm just wondering if anyone has any advise as far as any liquor I might enjoy or mixed drinks, or just anything. Would those kind of drinks be better out of a shotgl or just out of the bottle? I would appreciate any posts.
